Adoption isn’t an easy decision, but it may give the peace of mind you’re looking for. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t about “giving up a baby.” Rather, it’s providing your child with opportunities to succeed in an adoptive family.

While it’s a difficult choice for many women, adoption can provide the flexibility you desire. You can select the adoptive parents, choose from several adoption plans, and receive financial assistance during pregnancy and birth.

As the birth mother, know that your voice matters. Your well-being and that of your child is the priority.

Adoption plans

When you craft an adoption plan with an attorney or agency, you can decide what level of contact you’re looking for and whether you’ll have a relationship with the adoptive family. Your decisions and needs will be respected.

You will select from the following plans:

  • Open adoption: This plan is the most common, as it allows you to develop a relationship with the child and adoptive family. You can communicate with them through letters, visits, phone calls, and more.
  • Semi-open adoption: Semi-open adoptions aren’t as common, but you can still have contact via this plan. However, all contact occurs through an adoption attorney or agency. You may exchange limited information, such as your first names.
  • Closed adoption: The most uncommon plan, a closed adoption provides complete privacy. All identifying records are sealed, and you and the adoptive family will remain anonymous.

Support is available

Making a pregnancy decision is something only you have the right to make. No one can force you to place your child for adoption.

If you select this option, you won’t pay for adoption or pregnancy and childbirth-related expenses. You may also be entitled to additional financial and material assistance.

At Women’s Hope Medical Clinic, our Licensed Social Workers can provide information about adoption, answer your questions, and offer resources as needed. You won’t be alone as you learn about this option.
